Legalizing Medical Marijuana

I am not a medical expert. But what little knowledge I do have on the subject of prescription drugs and medicinal aid, has led me to become a supporter of modern medicine and research thereof.

For this article, I will do a simple comparison of medical marijuana and prescription drugs to aid in the explanation of my support of the former.

Marijuana is a naturally-grown substance. It has been proven to alleviate pain and stimulate the healing process of certain physical ailments. Although these are positive effects, it does have negative effects as well. Smoking marijuana will give the user a euphoric feeling(being “high”), and as we all know, anything that produces this effect will cause many users to abuse that substance. Long-term effects are low loss of brain cells and a low level of short-term memory loss. There is no physical withdrawal when terminating use of marijuana, and psychological withdrawal is minimal and short-lasting. To me, it is pretty obvious that the positive effects of medicinal marijuana largely outweigh the negative effects.

Prescription by drugs lawyers are derived from naturally grown plants and organisms. They have also been proven to alleviate pain and stimulate the healing process of certain physical ailments. As far as I know, pain killers are the most frequently prescribed drugs which cause a euphoric feeling, so I will use these for my comparison.

As with marijuana, the “high” experienced by the use of pain killers can also lead to the abuse of this substance. At this point is where the negative effects of these two substances become extremely different.

The abuse of pain killers can cause overdose, death and serious permanent physical and psychological damage. For someone using them but not abusing them, when trying to halt their usage, withdrawal is very unpleasant. It can cause chronic sickness both physically and psychologically. In fact, there are those who need up to a year of detoxification and treatment to become completely independent of a certain drug. And there are those who will never be free of the effects, and will spend the rest of their lives partaking in supplemental treatment, such as methadone for oxycodone users.

Despite the side-effects of pain killers, I believe, and most people with chronic pain and illness will tell you, that the positive effects of these drugs offense deem the negative irrelevant to some extent. Living in constant pain can ruin the quality of your life.

After weighing the pro’s and con’s of both medicinal marijuana and prescription drugs, short of eliminating prescription drugs altogether, I don’t see how we cannot promote and legalize the use of marijuana as a medicinal aid. God created it, let’s use it to our advantage.
