While states like Oregon and California, along with a dozen others, allow medical marijuana Controversy, other states do not, which means those caught with it can get arrested if they happen to be in a state that prohibits it, as happened to Montel Williams again.
Williams has been a proponent of the medical marijuana lawsuit and has received citations for his advocacy. Now he has received a different type of citation, having been arrested for possession of a pipe for smoking marijuana.
The former talk show host was arrested on Tuesday of this week in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as he was going through a security checkpoint at the airport, according to reports.
Montel Williams, a prominent medical marijuana defense attorney and former talk show host, was officially cited for possession of drug paraphernalia, following an incident that happened on Tuesday at General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Williams paid a fine, the Milwaukee Sheriff’s office stated, and went on his way. This is another incident in a number of them involving Williams, as he continues to emphasize the value of medical marijuana in the treatment of certain chronic illnesses.
Williams has his own foundation for multiple sclerosis, which he has suffered for a number of years and which has reduced his energy and capability for sustaining his former talk show television series. He remains, however, a frequent guest on television. He has a prescription for marijuana and uses it for his condition. His advocacy of medical marijuana has a prominent statement on his website by a group in support of its use.
Last year at the International Drug Policy Reform Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Williams, who has widely discussed his use of medical marijuana to relieve chronic nerve pain, was honored for what was referred to by the Huffington Post as “his groundbreaking journalism and outspoken medical marijuana advocacy. He received the Edward M. Brecher Award for Achievement in the Field of Journalism on November 13, 2009. This award is given to recognize those who exhibit courage and leadership in countering the official drug war messages, which the group that sponsors the conference refers to as propaganda.
Proponents maintain Williams present arrest is a clear example of the need for an overhaul of the nation’s drug policy.
