Medical Marijuana Legalization

Delaware Joining the Fight for Medical Marijuana Legalization

The state senate of Delaware voted on a bill to legalize medical marijuana Legalization with an overwhelming 17-4 vote. The bill now rests in hands of Jack Markell, the governor of Delaware, who already announced he would pass the bill. Marijuana won another state over with large numbers. Medical research proves beneficial results for HIV/AIDS patients, breast cancer patients, spasticity in multiple sclerosis, and many other diseases. Cannabis  law  legal heirs receives more media coverage because of the increasing number of states that accept the medical prognosis of the substance. The snowball effect has begun, more Americans are questioning “why is marijuana illegal?” The illegality of marijuana attorney takes away from production of industrial hemp, throws away tax-payer dollars for incarceration of marijuana criminals, brings an unnecessary black market into cannabis, and strikes down a medicine that could benefit a countless number of patients.

Medical Marijuana Legalization

With recognition of medical marijuana in several states, outright legalization for marijuana is in sight. The prohibition of marijuana just does not work in America. Like the prohibition of alcohol, the prohibition of marijuana brings in a black market for the drug, violent crime, criminals who are incarcerated with tax payer dollars, and unrestricted regulation of the substance. According to stopthedrugwar.org, “Nearly 60,000 marijuana offenders are incarcerated in the United States at any given time, according to a study published in the Federation of American Scientists’ “Drug Policy Analysis Bulletin.” More than a quarter of marijuana offenders are incarcerated for personal possession, with no other drugs involved in the offense.”Taking away jail space, and tax payer dollars incarcerated marijuana criminals do not belong in prison. Marijuana possession is a non-violent crime that brings no harm to the American society.

Decriminalizing marijuana or making it legal not only for medical patients but for the general public could benefit the United States. Taxes on the substance could generate profits for the government in a time of economic recession. Legalizing marijuana would take away the negative connotation that society puts on it. Alcohol and tobacco, both legal in the United States, are proven to be more dangerous than marijuana. In fact marijuana is far less dangerous. The National Institute on Drug Abuse attribute zero deaths annually from primary use of marijuana. This compared to the thousands of death from alcohol and tobacco. Marijuana is a safe drug that also provides medicinal aspects. This alone makes marijuana seems like a dream substance. The industrial use of hemp brings in another huge benefit of legalizing marijuana.

Categorized as a controlled substance by the United States government, industrial hemp can not get a person “high.” Industrial hemp, if cultivated at a widespread level it would help many sectors of the United States economy. It can be created into food, make paper (this would also help the forestation problem in the world), make clothing, and most importantly possibly be used as fuel. Ecocomposite.org recognizes the beneficial results that hemp could create “hemp oil is also a possible fuel source. It can run in diesel engines and be turned into a high octane gasoline.” Pulled away from society, industrial hemp once thrived in the United States. George Washington even grew industrial hemp. If the United States brought back industrial hemp at a large level more industry would be created and it would bring a new possible fuel sources.

As a controlled substance, the United States government established a blunder with its law. Another reason for legalization, industrial hemp has a future with new laws that are being passed like the medical marijuana law by Delaware.

Delaware’s new medical marijuana law gives another reason for pro-marijuana advocates to look up. The snowball effect is tumbling fast with marijuana legalization. Propaganda by the government creates an environment where the United States citizens are ignorant. By learning more about marijuana, Americans will see the effectiveness that the substance could create. The industrial hemp market that could be made, would stimulate the economy. It could be used as a safe drug, that is less dangerous than alcohol. And most importantly where this all began-marijuana is medicine.
